Modern Foreign Languages

Bonjour Monsieur et Madame. Ça va?

French has been chosen as our modern foreign language.

All children from Reception to Year 6 benefit from the expertise of a native speaker to develop their linguistic skills in an enjoyable way. Each French lesson uses a variety of techniques to encourage the children to have an active engagement with French, and to develop a positive approach to languages.

French in a meaningful context

Haseltine’s French curriculum is in line with the new National Curriculum and is adapted to each class topic to ensure children learn French in a meaningful context. In Early Years and Key Stage 1, children are given opportunities to listen to and perform traditional songs and to join in with story-telling (in KS1). Each song or story explores the basics of the French phonics.

In Key Stage 2, children are given opportunities to engage in short-conversations (Year 3-4) and role-plays (Year 5-6). They are also assessed in reading and writing short passages and authentic texts. Whenever possible, children are involved in French events, such as the Pancake Day (Year 1) or Bastille Day.
